t’s impossible to talk Tommy John Surgery (TJS) success stories without starting with the man himself. Through the 1974 season, Tommy John had pitched 2,152 2/3 major league innings, struck out 1,273 batters, and posted a 2.97 ERA which was good for a league-adjusted 116 ERA+. He wasn’t a Hall of Famer, but he’d had a very, very good major league career. When his elbow gave out that year it seemed likely that the 31-year-old’s career was at an end.

Instead he elected to have the experimental UCL reconstruction surgery and went through a grueling year of rehabilitation before returning to the majors in April 1976. John went on to pitch another 14 (!) seasons in the majors before finally hanging up his spikes in 1989 at age 46. His post-TJS statistics are inspiring: a 164-125 win-loss record, 2,544 2/3 innings pitched, 972 strikeouts, 3.66 ERA, and a 107 ERA+.
Arianna Huffington got rejected by 36 publishers.
It’s hard to believe that one of the most recognizable names in online publications was once rejected by three dozen major publishers. Huffington’s second book, which she tried to publish long before she created the now ubiquitously recognizable Huffington Post empire, was rejected 36 times before it was eventually accepted for publication.
Her childhood was frightful and filled with horrible abuse and abject poverty. But, like most successful people, Oprah doesn't dwell on stuff like that.

"I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who from an early age knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good." - Oprah Winfrey
Limor Fried of Adafruit IndustriesLimor Fried, who earned her masters in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, runs Adafruit industries, which sells do-it-yourself electronics kits. For every kit Adafruit sells, Fried posts design files, schematics for circuit boards, and any software code needed. She welcomes people to use the information, and sees it as a way to foster innovation. "People want to see the world become a better place through science and engineering," Fried says. "We're going to need the current and future generations to get inspired." Fried launched her company in 2005 with $10,000 that was supposed to go to her tuition. Any time she made a profit, she made a tuition payment. Today, the company ships between 150 to 200 orders a day, some of them worth thousands of dollars.
